Personal Problems #01

PERSONAL PROBLEMS

It often takes great courage to acknowledge and accept that we have difficulty in managing certain aspects of our lives or our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

Although many of us could benefit from emotional help at some point in our lives, taking the first step to seek counselling can feel daunting. As adults, we often feel we should be able to cope, so we understand that seeking professional help could stir up uncomfortable feelings surrounding inadequacy, failure, weakness and more. You may feel embarrassed or ashamed at the prospect of talking about yourself, your struggles and your life to an unknown 'professional'. You may have doubts as to how another human being can possibly begin to understand, accept and help you. You may simply just not know where to begin - it all feels too complex, too confusing, too overwhelming, too threatening, or too exposing.....

People seek professional therapeutic help because there is a sense that their unique and familiar life-long coping strategies are no longer effective.

It may be that a particular life event or experience triggers highly unwanted reactions and feelings that seem disproportionate or unrelated to what is currently happening.

Often the people they usually turn to for support seem too close, inappropriate or part of the overall difficulty. Some seek help for specific problems and symptoms, such as:

Abortion
Abuse: emotional, physical and sexual
Addictive/compulsive behaviours

Anger
Anxiety

Nothing Feels Right...

Some people find it difficult to pinpoint exactly why they are coming for help.

They know however that they feel unhappy, anxious, alone, angry, frustrated or unfulfilled and have the gnawing sense that there could be so much more to be gained from all their relationships and from the way their lives are progressing.
