ABOUT YOU

Why Self-Understanding, Self-Awareness and Self-Acceptance is so Important

The world is full of advice. When we are struggling with life we often find ourselves either seeking advice or in receipt of unwanted advice. When nothing really changes as a result, this can lead us to feel completely alone and misunderstood. We may find ourselves feeling inadequate, inferior and hopelessly lost. Frequently we then withdraw from well-meaning others for fear of being found wanting.

The desire to feel happy is a primary need in all of us. If we could simply think our way out of our emotional difficulties, wouldn't life be easy? In our attempts to feel happier we sometimes fall back on the natural tendency to rationalise our difficulties and use logical thinking to try to change our situation. Rational and positive thought may bring some relief but it is often found to be short-lived.

Frequently the things we find the most difficult to become aware of and accept in ourselves are the things that cause us the most pain, distress and difficulty in living.

It is these parts, the less rational and unknown parts of us, that continue to motivate, shape and influence who we are and how we deal with all aspects of our lives.

Facing Yourself

Meaningful and lasting change stems from developing a new and different kind of self-understanding.

We all have a need to grow. Nothing stays the same and nothing ever will. Our losses mount up and we rely on old self-protection strategies to get by. The counselling we offer is not about advising you how to be or live your life. It is about sensitively helping you to become more emotionally aware of what is going on within you and between yourself and others (i.e. the quality of your relationships). This helps.
